'1880' Marzipan Figures by La Tienda Review

These cute little marzipan figures come in individual wrappers. Spanish marzipan is different from, say, German marzipan. These appear to be baked - slightly golden-browned on the surface and chewy in the middle, whereas German marzipan would be paler and a more uniform (wetter) texture all the way through. The flavour is 'toasty'. I love them.

Marzipan candy descends from a centuries' old tradition, the combination of almonds and sugar. The resulting 'dough' is quite pliable, and confectioners use this attribute to create whimsical figures before toasting them in an oven. The result is these marzipan 'figuritas'. There are about 12 per box.At the battle of Navas de Tolosa in the year 1212, it is said that the nuns of the San Clemente convent took care of the wounded soldiers. According to tradition, they ground up their stores of almonds in mortars and pestles, and then kneaded them together with sugar to create emergency rations. This type of bread (pan) produced with a pestle (maza) is supposed to have given rise to the name mazapán in Spanish - marzipan in English.

These are about the size of a snack candy bar, and they are great to eat just like that, straight out of the package. There is no chocolate or any other covering so you get the pure marzipan taste. There are only 3 ingredients: almonds, sugar, and invert sugar syrup. No nasty artificial ingredients. The main ingredient is almonds so the product is not too sweet, unlike other brands where the main ingredient is sugar. Product arrived fresh, soft, and moist, sealed in a plastic pack. It is eligible for free shipping, and it was shipped next day express. It is more expensive than other marzipan products because other products are mostly sugar or contain artificial ingredients. If you want to make marzipan fruits (especially for kids), consider purchasing love 'n bake marzipan in a can instead, which contains more sugar, which makes it more ideal for that purpose.
