(More customer reviews)Godiva truffles are awesome- no doubt about it. I love getting truffles from their boutique shops, where you can fill your box with exactly which flavors you like. Otherwise, at $2 per truffle, its just not worth buying their pre-packaged boxes (in which case I end up with 4 or 5 flavors I won't even eat-thats $10 waste on a small box). The reality is, however, their prices are so prohibitive that I only go to their shop 2 to 4 times a year for a treat (I believe its $36 per pound- quite a bit).
This brings me to their brilliant, new Godiva Gems. Godiva has finally found a way to package truffles in a manner that can be affordable to buy on a more frequent basis. If you go to their site and calculate the price per ounce of their chocolate boxes, you'll see the gems are the lowest price per ounce of any chocolate they offer.
The Gems are like the truffles with the same delicious ganache center and outer chocolate shell, although a little smaller (perhaps 1/2 size- In fact, their advertising had me expecting a teeny chocolate, but when I saw them, they looked rather large to me).
The difference is, with the Gems, the outer shell is 'assembly-line' dipped, like lindor/lindt truffles, and the shell is VERY thin. So thin, that when the Gems arrived in the mail (purchased and shipped from Godiva directly, not Amazon), roughly 1/2 of the gems in the box were cracked.
This is a problem becuase when you grab at a Gem, you can't tell if you have a cracked one or not until it is unwrapped. If you do end up with a cracked one, when you open the wrapper, tiny chards of chocolate fall everywhere- on your desk, into your keyboard, down your shirt, etc... It gets a little annoying after a while.
Other than that, the Gems are a great deal as far as Godiva chocolates go.
One last thing should be mentioned: The Gem packages purchased directly from Godiva are twice the size of the smaller ones they've been selling to drug and grocery stores. The price by ounce is actually cheaper to buy directly from Godiva, rather than from Amazon or a drugstore (although, Godiva's shipping prices are very high in relation to the amount of product they are actually shipping out, so unless you have a coupon code, it may well be worth it to go with the CVS or Amazon Gems).
Would definitely recommend for a Godiva lover, but perhaps look for something else if you're shopping for a gift.
