I first tasted lebkuchen in a coffee shop in Nuremberg, Germany back in college days, and have loved them ever since. At our house, their other name is 'the best cookie in the world.' These rank right up among the very best I've ever had -- they're soft, yet a little chewy, and the bittersweet chocolate coating contrasts nicely with the gingery taste underneath. I have trouble opening a package, then not wanting to eat 'em all! We've gone through one order's worth, and I just ordered two more for the holidays...that's how good they are.
