(More customer reviews)I tried my first Equal Exchange bar yesterday. The cocoa flavor is deep and lingers in the mouth, the mark of a good chocolate, beyond what you would expect from the middling 38% cocoa content (most premium milk chocolate starts at 40%, 50% is common and there are some bars with 60% cocoa). The fact their cacao is sourced from Latin America helps, as South America is the ancestral home of cacao, and American cacao (specially from Venezuela, Ecuador and Trinidad) tends to be better than the industrial forastero grades grown in Africa or Indonesia. This chocolate was also conched properly, with a very smooth texture. The hazelnuts it is blended with are hard to discern, however. They may contribute to the smoothness.
This is world-class chocolate. I would not hesitate to put it in the same company as the best from Valrhona, Cluizel, Guittard or Hachez. The price is relatively moderate for premium chocolate.
I tend to be suspicious of the Fairtrade label. Their certification is expensive, and most of the money goes to pay Western experts than the poor farmers it purports to help. I tried "Divine" brand chocolates, as the company is actually owned by cocoa farmers in Ghana and the Ivory Coast, but was disappointed with grainy and fairly insipid bars. The good thing about Equal Exchange is the product stands on its own, even before the feel-good factor.
