When I was a kid, I would eat any kind of licorice. And we always had licorice in the house because my mother likes it, especially red or chocolate Twizzlers.
But over the years, I've become a die-hard black licorice purist. I particularly like British allsorts and Dutch honey tops. I draw the line at salted licorice, which is just repulsive. Black licorice is an acquired taste that's worth acquiring. But I fail to see how anyone can learn to love the flavor of salt and ammonia.
I snagged a bag of this Aussie pineapple licorice at a local remainder store mainly because it was cheap and piqued my curiosity.
Nothing went to waste. While pineapple is unlikely to woo me away from black licorice, it's soft and easy to eat with just the right balance of sweet and tart flavors. I'll need to order some for the holidays.
